A manuscript critique is a big picture assessment of the storytelling elements of your novel. Elements I will look at include plot, structure, theme, characterization, and pacing.

Substantive Editing (aka Developmental Editing)

Substantive editing is an in-depth edit that focuses on the big picture aspects of a story. It evaluates how well the various storytelling elements (plot, structure, characterization, theme, etc.) have been handled and provides suggestions on how to improve the work.

What you’ll get: a comprehensive editorial report (typically between 8 to 15 pages) assessing the storytelling elements of your novel, plus edits and notes in the manuscript pages.

Stylistic Editing

Stylistic editing involves going through the manuscript line-by-line to improve readability and flow. This type of edit clarifies meaning, eliminates jargon, improves sentence construction, and ensures reading level and tone are appropriate for the intended audience.

What you’ll get: an expanded editorial report (typically between 3 to 8 pages) detailing your writing style strengths and weaknesses, edits and notes in the manuscript pages, and a style guide.

Copy Editing

Copy editing focuses on the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, and style. It ensures the overall consistency and correctness of a document. Copy editing also includes suggestions to improve clarity and scene organization.

What you’ll get: a basic editorial report (typically between 2 to 5 pages) detailing your writing strengths and weaknesses, edits and notes in the manuscript pages, and a style guide if you don’t already have one.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the final read through of a typeset manuscript before it is published. It ensures that no egregious errors have been missed, and fixes errors resulting from layout.

What you’ll get: edits and notes in the manuscript pages which flag issues you may need to address before publication.

Rates

Rates will vary depending on the type of editing requested. For larger projects, I will provide a free sample edit. This will allow you to see how I edit, and help you decide if I am the right editor for your project.
