Clovis Editorial offers a variety of novel editing services. Here's a look at what they are and what you can expect from them.

Manuscript Critique

A manuscript critique is a big picture assessment of the storytelling elements of your novel. Elements I will look at include plot, structure, theme, characterization, and pacing.

What you’ll get: a comprehensive editorial report (typically between 8 to 15 pages) assessing the storytelling elements of your novel and suggesting ways to improve the work.

Substantive Editing

A substantive edit (a.k.a. developmental edit) is an in-depth edit that focuses on the big picture aspects of a story. It evaluates how well the various storytelling elements (plot, structure, characterization, theme, etc.) have been handled and provides suggestions on how to improve the work.

What you’ll get: a comprehensive editorial report (typically between 8 to 15 pages) assessing the storytelling elements of your novel, plus edits and notes in the manuscript pages.

Stylistic Editing

A stylistic edit involves going through the manuscript line-by-line to improve readability and flow. This type of edit clarifies meaning, eliminates jargon, improves sentence construction, and ensures reading level and tone are appropriate for the intended audience.

What you’ll get: an expanded editorial report (typically between 3 to 8 pages) detailing your writing style strengths and weaknesses, edits and notes in the manuscript pages, and a style sheet if you don't already have one.

Copy Editing

A copy edit focuses on the mechanics of grammar, punctuation, spelling, usage, and style. It ensures the overall consistency and correctness of a document. Copy editing also includes suggestions to improve clarity and scene organization.

What you’ll get: a basic editorial report (typically between 2 to 5 pages) detailing your writing strengths and weaknesses, edits and notes in the manuscript pages, and a style sheet if you don’t already have one.

Coaching

Coaching sessions are focused on helping writers flesh out their story ideas and getting those ideas onto paper in the form of a workable draft. This is a highly customizable service that is tailored to suit your needs.

What you’ll get: regular one-on-one meetings via Zoom. Depending on your needs, meetings can be weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly from 30–60 minutes.

Rates

Rates will vary depending on the novel editing services you request. For larger projects requiring copy editing, I will provide a free sample edit. This will allow you to see how I edit, and help you decide if I am the right editor for your project.
